Edinburgh Panda = Good. Google Panda = Bad.

1 May

Google Panda updates have re-written the SEO rulebook.

On 24th February,  Google’s most recent large algorithm update saw many websites’ rankings (and therefore traffic) fall away. It’s subsequent release to the rest of the world in April saw a similar effect. What is becoming increasingly clear, however, is that for most websites, their rankings have only just begun to be effected.

This most recent update, seems to be effecting many smaller websites. Whilst Google is eager to downplay the size of the most recent update, it is clear that for many people the effect may be worse than the initial release.

What does this mean for you? Well, if you have duplicate content issues then you really need to sort them out! Furthermore, Google’s algorithm is increasingly becoming smarter at judging the quality of a website – no longer on just a content level, but also on a design level.

Recent updates to Google Analytics’ tracking code include a new metric to measure page load speeds. This hints at another new metric Google will use to evaluate your website’s quality. If a page takes too long to load then that’s bad for visitors  and Google will stop sending visitors that way.

Whilst standard SEO techniques still stand, it is more important than ever to ensure your website has high quality, unique content that is genuinely engaging,  insightful for users and visitors and most of all interactive via social media avenues.

Modern SEO best practice.

Google’s search results aren’t what they used to be. Need proof? Just look at its results page. No longer solely comprised of traditional, organic site matches, Google now lists local maps, images, videos and social cues as well — and it’s affecting more than just what you see.

If you rely heavily on search engines for pageviews and sales, as many businesses do, Google search results will drastically affect how your customers find you. If your business needs to be seen and clicked, take into account the following six search engine tips.

1  |  Go Local

Google-places-with-hotpot

There’s a good probability that a large chunk of the Google searches you perform will display Google Places listings – and consumers are taking notice.

If your business relies on local listings, concentrate on scoring a seat at Google Places. You can do this by using:

  • Citations: Ensure that your correct business information is listed in as many (reputable) sources as possible around the Internet. As always, consistency is king. If you write “Blvd.” instead of Boulevard on your Google Places page, make sure your other listings reflect the same.
  • Google Places page optimization: Just like your website, make sure your Places page is properly optimized. Include categories that match exactly, and point your Places page back to a city-specific landing page if applicable.
  • Reviews: Google will only display reviews from Google, but getting reviews from aggregators like Yelp, Superpages or Trip Advisor will help increase your presence.

2  |  No search without Social

The separation of search and social has officially ended. Social cues such as Twitter shares, Facebook likes and social bookmarking heavily influence search rankings. Essentially, search results are personalized for each person. With any SEO campaign you put into motion, include a social aspect to it to facilitate information sharing.

3  |  Think People, not Robots

Robots

People search in Google because they have a question. Anticipate those questions — whether about the best style of jeans or where to get the lowest mortgage rate. Your keywords and the content on your pages should reflect the answers to those questions. Keyword research is tedious, but it’s arguably the most important aspect of SEO.

4  | Content Links are King

Google is not stupid — it can spot paid and spam links. For the most effective long-term SEO strategy, move the focus back to great content, both on your website and across other sites. Guest blogging is great, for instance, but to get a leg up on your competition, target blogs that aren’t direct matches to your industry.

5  |  Go to Source

Source_code

The Big Three (Google, Yahoo and Bing have worked together to develop Schema.org, a set of website standards that will tell search engines what your site is about, making it easier for those engines to read the site’s data and index accordingly.

By using rich snippets, for product reviews and prices, upcoming events, etc, the added data will increase your click-through rate because users are able to preview more about the link before they commit to the click.

Google + goes live for ALL!

21 Sep

Google_

Search engine giant Google has finally opened the doors of its Google+ social networking platform for the general public.

Earlier the platform, which was launched in June, was open to only those who received an invitation to join. During this beta testing period, the platform soared in popularity, grabbing more than 25 million users in a just a few weeks.

Now, Google+, which got rave reviews over its sharing and privacy features, is available for the public to open accounts on the platform without requiring an invitation.

Google, it seems, has now launched a full frontal assault on Twitter and Facebook, but it will be a wait and watch game to see how far it can go in social networking race?

A ripple in the [social media] ocean?

Google

There’s no way to know whether Google+ will catch on as a new social network with Facebook’s current domination of the social scene. But at the very least Google deserves credit for raising the bar in social media, forcing Facebook to keep up in key areas like video chat.

With Google+ hogging the spotlight last week, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg tried to steal some attention back by promising to unveil an “awesome” new feature, which turned out to be a partnership with Skype that will allow one-to-one chats, and probably group chats in the near-ish future.

Even without an established presence or substantial number of members, Google+ has already succeeded in making its presence felt by forcing Facebook to up its game in response. Google+ still looks a lot like Facebook, and it faces an uphill battle in wooing Facebook users away; but if it keeps pressure on Facebook to constantly improve its products, it will be a success story (of a sort) regardless.

The Social Media tidal wave…are you riding it?

Facebook landing pages…WOW!!

Custom_facebook

Bored with Facebook with its same old design? Want to break from the herd and make your page stand out from the crowd?

With Facebook Fan Pages there is an array of apps you can plug in to customize what people see when they land on your Page.

You’ve probably seen custom Fan Pages like those of Coca-Cola, Pringles and ASOS. When you land there, you start on what is essentially a mini website within Facebook, instead of the Page’s wall or feed.

These are often used to promote deals, call attention to new products, or simply welcome visitors with an attractive branded splash page.

To be able to create something really special you need to know your HTML from your FBML, so we would strongly recommend contacting a designer to help you with this – or just call us!

Another way to have fun and interact with your fans.

Facebook Poll – Social Media as a business tool? Have your say…

Having just presented to a large group of eager social media ‘virgins’ on how to start a Social Media campaign, I am curious to know if you think it will be a worthwile investment of time considering that in 2011 businesses will be concentrating on Social Media Optimisation rather than traditional SEO.

Looking forward to seeing the results.

Merry Christmas to one and all.
