What the World’s Biggest Websites Looked Like at Launch – it all starts somewhere!

23 Dec

Google. While the company’s design doesn’t seem to have changed a whole lot, its services and capabilities sure have. Created by Stanford PhD students Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Google officially launched Sept. 4, 1998. The interface was so simple because the founders didn’t know HTML and were looking for a quick design.

Google

YouTube. The video sharing website that brought us hits like “Charlie bit my finger” and “Sneezing panda” first launched in February 2005 with a practically empty interface and no evidence of videos. The first video uploaded to the site was created by one of YouTube’s founders, Jawed Karim, and was titled “Me at the Zoo.” It was a 19-second clip of him in front of elephants at the San Diego Zoo.

Youtube

Facebook…or should I say Thefacebook…was created by Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004. As the original interface indicates, the site was only available for Harvard University students, which eventually expanded to today’s 800 million users across the world.  The interface also featured the image of a man’s face in the upper left hand corner, a digitally manipulated photo of Al Pacino.

Thefacebook

Yahoo! An acronym for “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle,” Yahoo was the product of another Stanford duo, Jerry Yang and David Filo. In March 1995 the site was heralded as the first online navigational guide to the web. The original interface featured a simple search bar and hyperlinks to other websites, but soon became a sleek, personalized news website.

Yahoo

Amazon. The mecca of online shopping can trace its roots back to 1995, when it was primarily an online bookstore. Jeffrey Bezos named the site after the Amazon River. The original site contained small text and icons, which still informs its most recent design.

Amazon

Twitter. This barely recognizable design was the first concept of co-founder Jack Dorsey back in July 2006. It featured the word “Twttr,” which was inspired by Flickr and SMS shortcode (which always includes five characters). Although the interface design has changed at least six times in the last five years, that hasn’t deterred its more than 100 million users.

MySpace. Launched in August 2003 as a competitor to Friendster, MySpace’s original design was pretty bland. When MySpace skyrocketed to popularity between 2005 and 2008, News Corp. bought the social networking site for $580 million. Although it holds the former title of most-visited site on the Internet, MySpace sharply declined in the past few years. The site recently sold to Specific Media and Justin Timberlake for $35 million.

Since the rise of the Internet in the ’90s, the web has shown no signs of slowing down. We’ve watched the birth and evolution of social media, e-commerce and online video entertainment.

It’s hard to imagine that the treasured websites we all use today were at one point just scribbles on a piece of paper. Seeing how far the world has come in terms of web design, where do you foresee us heading next?

Twitter

Some of the things that twitter can do for you…

  • Market research – whether you are trying to determine what products/services your customers are really wanting or what your competition is doing, twitter is a powerful tool to
    accomplish this.
  • Get new business – Did you know that you can use Twitter Search to find terms that are in your niche?  We have a client that is a travel agent. Whenever, she does a twitter search for the word “cruise”, she pops them a message with a link to an article about things they should take into account when planning a cruise.  She get’s regular business this way!
  • Track your competition -  If you want to know what your competition is doing and how they operate, twitter provides a great way to see their marketing in action!
  • Promote your product -  Let people know that you have a new product or service coming out!  Build a little momentum by teasing them a little.  Perhaps a first look if they sign on to your optin list & they will get a better deal!
  • Build relationships – We are believers in that there is enough business for everyone.  And just because someone is in the same niche doesn’t mean they are a competitor.  Find others who complement your business and get to know them.  Talk about joint ventures.  This has been very successful for us.
  • Get more exposure – Just like you are searching for key words, others are as well.  Be sure to create a tweet for all of your blog posts.  (Just another reason why article titles are important!!)

A hashtag, according to Twitter, is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages.

Hashtag

1. Track conversations

A hashtag is an amazingly simple way to search through all the posts that have been generated using a particular hashtag. It’s a great way for an organisation to stay tuned in to what people are saying about you, as long as their using the hashtag you’re tracking.

2. Host a chat around a hashtag

Yes, you can host Twitter chats using a hashtag. It’s simple really.

Post your questions and conversations as you normally would, but include your hashtag in all those posts. Encourage your followers to use the hashtag. This will allow them to easily follow along and engage. Jumping into a Twitter chat is a great way to find and follow people who are talking about similar interests. As you engage and interact in these chats, you’ll also find that your follower count will begin to increase.

3. Simple Searching

A hashtag was created to categorise Tweets. To categorise something is to group it. You can find items when they’re grouped together. See how that works? Your brand, your product, your services or even your event should be hashtagged. It allows others to search what people are saying about you, it allows you to track, and others to jump in the conversation. It all comes back full circle with the hashtag!

5. For the Fun of it

Some might say the hashtag is being abused by people hashtagging random thoughts or full sentences. I don’t think there is anything wrong with it.

The #sarcasm hashtag gets used quite a bit, even when it doesn’t need to be. The #IJustUsedAHashtagBecauseItsARandomThought Hashtag gets used quite a bit as well. It’s ok. Use them up, I don’t think those hashtags are going to be used for true searches anyway. Social media should be about the fun, so if you enjoy a  128 character hashtag’s, go for it. Just don’t expect us to try and read it!

To own a hashtag is to own a conversation, to follow that conversation, engage in that conversation, and to keep that conversation. When you own and monitor a conversation, the discoveries you can make about your community are priceless.

Tweet o’clock?

9 Nov

Knowing when to tweet can be the make or break of a campaign. With over 200 million tweets posted each day, this is a very important question to tackle. When you better time your tweets, you’re better able to reach your followers. Furthermore, knowing when they’re actually online is incredibly important.

Tweet_oclock

This tool is fantastic mainly because of its simplicity. Drop your username into WhenToTweet and the app works out the stats for you. It will come up with a very easy to understand graph, detailing which time of the day you should start tweeting.

Your best times are determined by two key measures: the performance of your past tweets and when most of your followers will be online.

Know your Followers.

Knowing your target audience is fundamental to the success of any business. By utilising social media, your message can reach farther than ever before, but do you know to whom you are reaching and if that message is relevant?

A new tool developed by Schmap, uses a mixture of biographical, location and content data from people’s public Twitter feeds, to build up an idea of the type of people following a person on the microblogging platform.

Charlie_sheen

Using this methodology, the service analysed some of the top celebrity tweeters’ followers and found that the majority of American actor Charlie Sheen’s Twitter 5.1 million-strong audience are iPhone users, tweet a lot and ‘like to party’.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron has a high concentration of lawyers following his Twitter account, while TV chef Jamie Oliver tends to attract more teachers on the service.

‘Know Your Followers’ is open to any Twitter user and has both a free and paid for version – depending on the level of depth of analysis a person requires on their followers.

Without paying a fee, any Twitter user can receive a summary analysis of their following – showing patterns in gender, marital status, profession, likes and interests amongst a person’s followers.

“As individuals, we’re naturally curious to discover who follows our tweets. This new service goes much deeper – to the commercial imperative of brands and corporations, ad buyers, the media, political campaigners, event promoters and local merchants to understand their audiences on this increasingly significant social medium,” explains Paul Hallett, Schmap’s chief executive.

The Growth of Social Media [Infographic]

24 Sep

Say what you will about the tidal wave that is social media: it’s over-hyped, a fad halfway through its 15 minutes, that <insert social network, platform, app> surely won’t be around in a few years’ time.

But take a look below at the steep curve of the user growth rate in all age ranges and demographics, and the continuing pervasiveness of social networking into every facet of work, play and life in general. It’s hard to argue that social media hasn’t changed forever how we interact and connect online. See for yourself:

Twitter to Release Web Analytics

19 Sep

Twitter_web_analytics

Twitter is a powerful platform for websites to share their content, and drive traffic and engagement. However, people have struggled to accurately measure the amount of traffic Twitter is sending to their websites, in part because web analytics software hasn’t evolved as quickly as online sharing and social signals.
